Gum Disease

Gum disease is an infection of the tissues that surround and support your teeth. It is a major cause of tooth loss in adults. Because gum disease is usually painless, you may not know you have it. Also referred to as periodontal disease, gum disease is caused by plaque, the sticky film of bacteria that is constantly forming on our teeth.

What Causes Gum Disease?

Gum disease starts when bacteria form in a sticky film on your teeth, called biofilm. If not properly cleaned, the bacteria can move deep into the gums, causing swelling, bleeding, and infection. Gingivitis is the earliest stage of gum disease - inflammation of the gums caused by plaque. The good news is, it is 100% reversible at this stage with good oral hygiene and professional cleaning.

As the disease gets worse, the gums pull back, creating pockets where bacteria thrive. Overtime, the infection spreads deeper, breaking down the attachment between gum and tooth. Bone loss occurs, teeth may loosen, and in severe cases, teeth can be lost.

In its most advanced stage, periodontitis, the bone supporting the teeth begins to break down, leading to loose or lost teeth. Dr. Di Xia (Dr. Dee) treats gum disease at all stages to help protect your oral health.

You can identify common symptoms at home, including:

  • Red, swollen gums

  • Bleeding

  • Chronic bad breath

  • Increased tooth sensitivity

  • Early stages: We provide a program of professional cleanings to reverse the effects of gum disease.

  • Scaling and root planing: If the infection has spread, we can use a deep cleaning technique to remove plaque and harmful bacteria from below the gumline.

  • Severe periodontal disease: When your tooth root and bone is affected, we may refer you to a periodontist for a surgical procedure.
